A vision of hope in a dark season.
‘Go and look toward the sea,’ he (Elijah) told his servant. And he went up and looked. ‘There is nothing there,’ he said. Seven times Elijah said, ‘Go back.’ The seventh time the servant reported, ‘A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.’ 1 Kings 18:43-45 (NIV UK)
There was a huge drought across the land, but Elijah had just seen a supernatural victory at Mount Carmel when God brought down fire from heaven upon the altar. It was an incredible miracle, and it demonstrated to the prophets of Baal that the God of Elijah was the one, true and only God. But after a long, long drought, the land badly needed rain. Elijah knew in his spirit that rain was coming and said to Ahab in 1 Kings 18: 41: ‘Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.’ There was no physical sign of this rain yet, but Elijah could ‘hear’ the sound of what was shortly to come.
So sure of this rainfall, Elijah sent his servant to go and look toward the sea to see what was on the horizon. The servant couldn’t see anything, and so Elijah sent him back seven times, until the seventh time when the servant reported that he could see ‘a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.’ This was all that Elijah needed, so he told Ahab that he needed to get ready, to hitch up his chariot and get home before the rain stopped him. And from that tiny spec on the horizon, the sky filled with clouds, the wind rose, and the promised heavy rain began to pour from the heavens.
